Dear Friends + Family,
This past week has been pretty full and exciting. First of all, in construction we managed to replace a concrete piping system, build a fence around a local property, and painted the walls of the salon. This was one of our most productive weeks in construction!
As for Friendship Camp, the camper attendance has been quite low, but our leaders of the day put in a great effort to keep the campers on track and focused, thus resulting in a successful week of camp. Furthermore, our last day of camp on Friday was a blast! The campers had so much fun playing many games of capture the flag, hike and seek, and especially sliding on our homemade slip and slide.
On Wednesday, our group took a break from the hard work to go on a day-long excursion filled with many fun activities. First, we visited Trapiche, a sugarcane farm where we learned to make lots of snacks and drinks made from sugarcane. We also got to visit a few of the animals at the farm, where we were all given the opportunity to hold bunnies and milk cows.
After sharing a traditional Costa Rican meal at Trapiche, we took the bus to San Isidro, where we went to the local feria (farmers’ market) to buy food for our host families. Megan and Rob gave us instructions in the form of a riddle, which was: “Something on a tree, something underground, something sweet, and something round.”
After shopping at the feria, we all returned to Pueblo Nuevo to enjoy our free time at Pheobe, Sofia, and Olivia’s homestay. While there, most of us tried ghost peppers, while others enjoyed fresh fruit from the feria. After dinner, Jonah and Miles’s family invited us all over to hang out and eat smores. On our way back home from the party, some of us were able to watch the firewroks that celebrated the day of the the saint in a neighboring town.
Now that we are finished with our service, we are all very excited to go to Uvita, but also sad to say goodbye to our host families.
