Hola Familias!

This week was a blast! Since our arrival in Pueblo Nuevo, we have experienced many new traditions. We have had common Costa Rican foods mainly consisting of gallo pinto, plaintains, and fresh fruit and vegetables picked off the trees in our own backyards. In the mornings, we helped construct a roof for the local community center in record time. We also painted trees to help protect and beautify the landscape around the soccer field. In the afternoons we strategically planned our own classes, such as music, basketball, and English lessons for Friendship Camp starting on Monday! We are super excited to teach the kids in the community.

Each day we have enjoyed meals with our host families to improve our Spanish and connect with the locals. This weekend we took a trip to a pool where we enjoyed fresh coconut, sugarcane, cacao pods, and other unique fruits. On Sunday morning, we visited the Pueblo Nuevo Festival where we watched the annual soccer tournament and enjoyed the food and festivities. We are looking forward to the upcoming week of Friendship Camp, as well as our weekend excursion to a sloth sanctuary!

We continue to be challenged by the construction work we are doing for the first time and learning new words in Spanish. A few of our favorite things from this past week have been settling into our homestays, having time together as a group when we’re invited to other houses, and hanging out with the town’s president, Luis, and his dog, Pinto!
