The Special Topics Courses

As a Global Routes student, you have the option to earn credits via our special topics course. The course assigns credit based on the self-growth, cultural immersion, language skills,  goal setting, interpersonal skills development, leadership development, outdoor leadership, and expedition skills.

Students have a choice between three different courses, each worth 4-quarter credits at Portland State University.  Students will typically take no more than two courses over the duration of their 3+ week Global Routes Programs, however shorter programs are also eligible to earn credits.

How to earn credit

When enrolling in your Global Routes summer program, students can complete an additional form to apply for college credit.  From there, families can make tax-deductible payments for the program and all course credit fees, such as through a 529 college fund.  Don’t worry – no classrooms or lectures here! Instead, students earn college credit as they meet the outcomes associated with transformational travel.

  1. Let you interviewer know you’d like to potentially pursue some college credit and they’ll share the course syllabi for you to review with your family.
  2. If you decide to participate, students are billed an additional $1,200 to cover our Instructor of Record fees and those to the institution.  Complete the enrollment form selecting any of the available three courses.
  3. The major assignments consist of journal entries and doing awesome and amazing things. Not to worry about missing experiences while studying – students earning credit participate in all the activities as those who are not earning credit!
  4. Write one final paper due roughly a month after return.

Benefits of earning college credit

It helps improve the learning, first and foremost!  But aside form the obvious, earning college credits as a high school student can have some advantages on your resume for work, or when applying to college/university.  Arriving with college credits may even offer you more time to study abroad in college.

A word of caution, however, with transferring credits into future institutions, is that in most cases it’s entirely up to the receiving institution how they are received, and if so, how many are count in which category of your education.  You don’t have to transfer the credits, but having them can be helpful.
