Tropical storms, Campfires, & New Friends at Miloli’i

Since the last blog, our group checked the pH levels with some of the kids of Miloli’i and played a heated and fun game of volleyball.

We got to know the kids of Miloli’i better. We also unfortunately had to temporarily move our camp to a hotel, where we enjoyed showers and beds, because of the tropical storm that hit the big island. During our stay at Manago hotel, we got to walk to an amazing food truck restaurant where we enjoyed tacos and more.

What were the highlights of the week?

One highlight was playing volleyball with native Hawaiians and bonding with them over something that we all loved. We even realized that we listened to some of the same music. The beach day was another highlight. We all had a fun time hanging out with each other on the beach after all the service we have been doing. Staying in a hotel was a nice surprise that we were not expecting but were happy about. Our campfire was an additional highlight that we enjoyed together. We made s’mores and enjoyed spending time together.

What’s something that was challenging this week?

This week, we were challenged by unpredictability. For instance, we had to go to a hotel due to the tropical storm that was approaching the island. Our plans changed in other ways and we were forced to learn to be flexible.

A little gratitude 👇

I am grateful for the opportunity to meet this community of native Hawaiians and to spend so much time with them. We have each had a chance to get to know them better as individuals. I have been surprised by the similarities we have with the Hawaiians, many of whom are our age. We enjoy and bond over many of the same things.

We have been learning about sustainability and culture here and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity. I have seen many things that I would not have been able to see if I did not come here.
