The Peru group has been warmly received in Pumamarca, Peru for a week-long homestay! Experiencing a rural mountainous lifestyle, with limited electricity and hot water, is a change of pace from life back home and presenting many opportunities to learn new skills. The group picked and shucked corn, a staple in Peruvian cuisine, at a farm close to their homestays this week. Weaving was a fun activity that everyone tried a hand at too! The fabrics are all very colorful and fairly thick, which is necessary in the wintertime for added warmth.
The group has successfully finished the grass roof on one of the bathroom facilities at the worksite. There are 5 more grass roofs to go! Other activities include fishing for trout in the local fishing hole with community members. Their catch will be added to the menu for dinner with their host families. The sun sets early in the winter, with the village in the shade by 3pm and sunset at 5:30pm, but all are waking up with the sun around 6:15am!
The students enjoyed exploring local ruins close to the homestay, with an active game of ninja a couple days ago. Many laughs were shared by all. More updates to come with some local community member interviews by our students!
