Gap Year

Through our sister organization, Carpe Diem Education, we offer structured international gap year experiences for students 18 – 22! Each of these gap programs aligns with our Global Routes values and focuses on small-group meaningful cultural immersion.

The Experience

During Global Routes programs, we see boundaries and perceived differences between students and communities drift away. They’re replaced by common ground, universal goodwill, and insights that students will take with them into the rest of their lives.

Since 1967, we’ve been designing experiential education programs that are about true exchange and positive impact. Decades of experience teach us that living and working with people around the world challenges people to open up, listen more, and undergo powerful personal growth.

We believe that a grounded, fun, and community-driven experience is not only the best way to travel, but the ideal way to help future leaders shape their own ideals, perspectives, and sense of self. I have taken away so many major learnings from this trip. My biggest takeaway was the importance of human connection. I was most surprised by the connections I was able to form even with the language barrier firmly rooted in place. In many ways, my connections seem to be deeper because I couldn't rely on spoken word but rather communicated through acts of service, hand motions, facial expressions, etc. I learned that at our core, I think we all just want to make connections with other humans any way we can -- that was my biggest takeaway.

From this experience I have gained a great deal of perspective, seeing how other people live their lives very differently from mine, I feel like I have a less self-centered worldview from this experience. Start your journey with Global Routes by either clicking “Enroll” or completing our simple Interest Form. From there, you’ll be directed to a page to complete your student interview and chat directly with our team!

The Application Process

1. Click “Enroll Now” and begin your enrollment process, or complete our Interest Form

If you’re ready to sign up for the most meaningful, impactful, and fun summer out there, go ahead and click “Enroll” to start the process. You’ll be asked to complete a CampMinder registration to access the enrollment documents.

Need a little more guidance about which program is for you? Want to chat with our team prior to enrollment? Awesome! Fill out our easy Interest Form to get started. From there, you’ll be directed to a calendar to schedule your interview.

2. Student Interview

Group dynamics and enthusiasm for learning are crucial for transformational travel, so we meet with every student prior to formal acceptance. Don’t worry! Interviews with our staff are informal chats to get to know you, ensure we’re setting you up for success, and to answer any questions you may have.

3. Acceptance & Tuition Payment

Woohoo! You’ve received word from our staff that you’re in. Next, you’ll follow the directions from our interviewer to complete registration and tuition payment.
