{"id":3071,"date":"2012-08-17T19:35:36","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T19:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.globalroutes.org\/?p=3071"},"modified":"2012-08-17T19:35:36","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T19:35:36","slug":"family-values-in-morocco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalroutes.org\/staging\/8011\/2012\/08\/17\/family-values-in-morocco\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Values in Morocco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Someplace far back in my mind while I was in Morocco, I always was aware that Morocco is a Muslim country with its own specific familial structures different from what we generally see in the US.\u00a0 But seeing and hearing about family values first hand is another thing all together.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3072\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3072\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.globalroutes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/carpet-seller.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3072\" title=\"carpet seller Morocco\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.globalroutes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/carpet-seller-228x300.png?resize=228%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carpet Seller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We went to visit a rug seller one day in Fez to learn about how carpets are made, about the meanings of some of the woven designs and symbols, and especially about how to bargain.\u00a0 And, really it should not have come as a surprise when the salesman began to talk about his family, or rather, in particular, his future relationships and relations with his family.\u00a0 \u201cOne day when older, you stay in the corner and you die. But who takes care of you? Your family,\u201d he said.\u00a0 He paused to take a sip of the mint tea with us.<\/p>\n<p>This was a big point to him; he explained that the bigger the family, the more people there are to take care of you, the better off you are.\u00a0 In short, he told us, you never want to be alone.\u00a0 And then he continued: \u201cWhen I have more money I would like a second wife.\u201d It would take \u201cmore money,\u201d he said, because women with their children and their own needs are very expensive.<\/p>\n<p>What kind of second wife would he like?\u00a0 \u201c55, I don\u2019t like.\u00a0 Thirty-five, is better. \u00a0I want young and beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t go into culture shock from his statements because really, we knew to expect this kind of thinking eventually.\u00a0 But on the other hand, when the conversation comes up what are you supposed to say in return?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Someplace far back in my mind while I was in Morocco, I always was aware that Morocco is a Muslim country with its own specific familial structures different from what we generally see in the US.\u00a0 But seeing and hearing about family values first hand is another thing all together.
