Both those who chose to come to Kakamega for some group time and also those who chose to remain in the villages and take more time with their\u00a0families. The group in town (which was 9 students) spent some time\u00a0wandering the local markets which are stocked with everything from\u00a0machetes and fried fish caught in Lake Victoria to fruits such as the\u00a0plentiful mangos at this time of the year, rubber shoes made of\u00a0recycled tires, and all sorts of amazing hair pieces for both men and\u00a0women.\u00a0The group also enjoyed some time pool side at a hotel and some much\u00a0appreciated french fries and hamburgers. Oh the things we miss about\u00a0America are oh so American!<\/p>\n<p>The final days of this week, students are finishing their independent projects, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starting a chess class for 30 students<\/li>\n<li>Painting a mural of the world map<\/li>\n<li>Planting trees and painting rocks for landscaping<\/li>\n<li>Holding a cultural day (which happened last friday and reportedly was\u00a0a great success with exchange of Luhya and some American cultural\u00a0activities)<\/li>\n<li>Finishing up creative writing classes designed by the interns themselves<\/li>\n<li>Purchasing a computer and printer with the help of the school\u00a0administration who pitched in for half and also providing volleyball nets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The weekend came at a great time for our group.
