NATURAL BUILDING PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Support the growth of permaculture and natural building design in Michigan – Climate change is the most significant issue of the 21st century. Contribute to a transformative project focused on sustainable design and permaculture practices. This project will be physically demanding and also rewarding.

You will have the opportunity to contribute your time and energy to this volunteer project while building valuable skills for the future in your journey to live more harmoniously and sustainably.

  • Clear walking paths throughout the project.
  • Build and make signs to support the project and experience for future volunteers.
  • Collect firewood and kindling.
  • Build a camp area so future volunteers might have the opportunity to camp. Design a camping community space with boulders, a fire pit, and a community space.
  • Build a living roof for the one room cabin using natural membrane, dirt, plants etc.
  • Recob the natural building structure using permaculture design principles.

ORIENTATION

Focusing the group and laying foundations:ย 

The program begins with group orientation and acclimation. You will practice working together so that you’ll be prepared to dive right into the natural building project. You’ll also be introduced to key permaculture design activities.

NATURAL BUILDING IMMERSION

Deep Dive into the issues at the heart of sustainability and climate change through your volunteer project

Students explore the kaleidoscope of climate issues through Permaculture and Natural Building principles, exploring their causes and consequences.

DEBRIEF AND RE-ENTRY

Adventure and Travel Back Home

Explore the majestic waterways of the Great Lakes region and reflect on all you’ve learned and accomplished and set goals for the future.
